ATLANTIC CANADA ADVENTURE CHALLENGE 2011

ATLANTIC CANADA ADVENTURE CHALLENGE 2011

Expedition from June 27 - to July 11th 2011 through a part of the Canadian "Atlantic" Provinces - Nova Scotia & Neufundland

100 years ago the iceberg which sunk the TITANIC started his voyage through the Arctic Ocean destination "Newfoundland".

This is our "Theme" this year for the "Atlantic Challenge". We will search for icebergs in the waters arround Newfoundland. We are also focused on whales comming in those nutrition rich waters from the south to eat enough for the winter.

Planed time shedule:

June 27
Arrival in Halifax
Transfer to VIPI Lodge overnight at VIPI Lodge, diving, relaxing, kayaking

June 28
Ferry to Port aux Basques
Arrival in Neufundland, driving to "Isle aux Morts"diving on the wreck "Ascania"

June 29
Driving to Twillingate

June 29 - July 1

2 daysof diving, hiking, paddling in the area arround Twillingate, overnight in B&B

Twillingate is an historic nice community at the "ICEBERG ALLEY"

The landscape here is a photographer's dream!

Diving:

Diving on Icebergs, one of the most exciting dives! We dive only on "safe" bergs, however a dive at an iceberg is always dangerous and demanding to divers. Very ofter whales are arround the icebergs....

Boats:

We are using D.O.T. approved and licensed RIBs which we tow during the whole trip to make sure we have always safe boats with us. We plan to do 2 dives per day, mostly in the mornings, so that we have enough time to hike and explore the land in the afternoon.

July 1

Driving to Bonavista / Trinity

July 1 - July 4

Both communities have a long history. Once they where important fishing communities, today the people live mostly from a few tourists who are looking for icebergs and whales. We will also dive at an old wreck we discovered 2 years ago in one of the bays near Trinity .

July 4

Driving to Conception Bay.

July 4 to July 7

Stay in the Ocean Quest Adventure Lodge in CBS

The area arround Conception Bay offers interesting landscapes, hidden bays, huge bird colonies, and often the chance of seeing whales!
Diving: Near Bell Island is one of the best wreck diving site in the world. The 4 freighters, sunken by 2 German U-Boats during WWII, are lying in a depth between 20 and 55 meters. The wrecks are straight on the ground and in a very good shape. Over the years the 4 wrecks are "stuffed" with marine life. A must for underwater photographers! Most of the time the visibility is more than 30 meters!

Here we are using the comfortable boat of Ocean Quest with washroom, heating system, diver plattform etc.

July 8

Excursion to the south coast of the Avalon Peninsula. At that time of the year the huge humpback whales comes very close to the shore to eat capelin, so the chances to see those enormously animals narrow are very good.

This interesting trip will bring us through tundras, small fishing villages and wild coast lines. With some chance caribou will be seen from the road.

July 9

Ferry to North Sydney Cape Breton. A nice "seatrip" of aprox. 14 hours....passing St. Pierre & Miquellon and the south coats of Newfoundland.
